Certificate IV in Massage Therapy Practice (HLT40307)

Certificate IV in Massage Therapy (HLT40307) at Premier College forms the solid foundations of all massage training and leads to a massage qualification within six months of commencement. Students who complete this massage course are then qualified as massage therapists and can go on to the Diploma of Remedial Massage (HLT50307) whilst earning an income in the industry.

This massage course comprises of six modules:

  • Massage 1 - Swedish Massage

  • Learn the techniques of delivering a full-body Swedish-style massage.
    Used as a system of long gliding strokes, kneading and friction techniques on the more superficial layers of muscle, generally in the direction of blood flow towards the heart and sometimes combined with active and passive movements of the joints. It is used to promote general relaxation, improve circulation and range of motion, and relieve muscle tension. Swedish massage is the most commonly used form of massage.

  • Massage 2 - Deep Tissue Massage

  • Discover how to diagnose and perform treatments using massage techniques that target individual muscle areas.
    Deep Tissue massage is otherwise known as soft tissue manipulation or myofascial release. The purpose of this module is to bring to the therapist a new range of therapeutic techniques for soft tissue work. Massage therapy can be very effective in treating musculoskeletal conditions, as has been demonstrated in Swedish Massage, however, a more clinical approach is required when treating many specific complaints, deep tissue techniques are designed for use in such situations. They are used to manipulate soft tissue, to affect deeper muscle groups & fibres and to elicit specific tissue responses to the techniques.

  • Anatomy and Physiology 1 - Systems of the Body

  • A fundamental component to all major modalities, learn about the functions and organisation of the human body. This section serves as an introduction to the study of Anatomy and Physiology.
    Students will learn how the body is organised from molecular level to organism level. Students will also begin to look at anatomical and medical terminology.

  • Anatomy and Physiology 2 - Body Mechanics, Structures and Muscles

  • This module explores the structure and function of muscles and joints.
    Examine the basic concepts of biomechanics, joint & muscle structure and function. Identify the major bony and soft tissue structures of the musculoskeletal system. Develop musculoskeletal assessment techniques. Develop postural assessment techniques.

  • Practice Management - How to run your own Massage Practice

  • Managing, marketing and communicating within a Natural Therapies Practice. Includes OH&S and infection control.
    Develop the skills and knowledge to effectively manage and administer a Natural Therapy practice. Develop the skills and knowledge to effectively communicate with clients, therapists and other health care professionals. Develop the skills and knowledge to effectively promote and market your health care business.

  • Student Clinic - Getting hands on practice

  • Practical application for Massage Therapists. Massage clinic is open to both Cert IV and Diploma students.

Diploma of Remedial Massage (HLT50307)

The Diploma of Remedial Massage (HLT50307) at Premier College sets the benchmark for massaging excellence. Students undertaking this massage qualification are given the opportunity to add to their massage skills with accredited training in Aromatherapy, Trigger Points, Reflexology as electives. Many graduates also enrol in these electives to upgrade their massage skills.

The Diploma of Remedial Massage (HLT50307) offers graduates the opportunity to sign up with all the major health funds to provide their clients with rebates for their treatments.

This course comprises of 4 Core units and 3 Electives:

  • Remedial Massage 1 - Pathologies (Core)

  • Building on the concepts of Deep Tissue Massage, you’ll learn how to fine tune and expand your techniques into specialised areas of pathology and symptomology.
    Massage has become an integral part of the new athletic and personal health regimen in sports medicine clinics, college training rooms, professional locker rooms, as well as health clinics, day spas and complementary medicine centres. A growing number of trainers believe that massage can provide an extra edge to the athletes who participate in high performance sports.

  • Remedial Massage 2 - Sports (Core)

  • Learn to perform pre & post event treatments for the sport active individual. Discover effective injury rehabilitation techniques and special tests for injuries.
    The sports massage therapist assists the athlete with pre and post event massage, suggestions for stretching routines, advice on the prevention of DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness). The sports massage therapist also plays a vital role in assisting other health professionals in the treatment and rehabilitation of sporting injuries. There are an increasing number of consumers who choose massage as part of their wellbeing routine, as integral part of returning to health and maintaining health.

  • Remedial Massage 3 - Lymph & Pregnancy (Core)

  • Building on all the principles of massage, learn how to treat colds and flu, migraine, hormone imbalances, pregnancy and immune deficiencies (lymphatic drainage techniques).
    In this module, students will study the role of massage for women and the conditions that affect women such as pre & post natal massage and menopause. They will also learn to apply techniques for the treatment and management of lymphatic conditions, incorporating organ drainage and post operative treatment protocols.

  • Student Clinic - Getting hands on Practice (Core)

  • Practical application for Massage Therapists. Massage clinic is open to both Cert IV and Diploma students.

  • Trigger Points (Elective)

  • Learn the theory and techniques behind one of the most powerful and effective manual therapies.
    Trigger Point Therapy is a practical and easily applied approach to pain therapy. It is achieved by repeated short, deep strokes that efficiently flush the trigger point and specifically stretch the tissue/s that require stretching.

  • Introduction to Aromatherapy in Massage (Elective)

  • Aromatherapy is the systematic application of plant extracted aromatic essences for therapeutic benefit. By understanding how to apply aromatherapy in daily life you can not only enjoy the fragrances but also maintain a system of preventative care for you and your family’s long-term well being. This course combines the use of essential oils and their application in therapeutic massage techniques.

  • Reflexology 1 (Elective)

  • A tactile therapy involving principles of zones and reflexes. Course focuses on the feet reflexes to all major body organs and systems. Includes hand overview
